Haochi Che

I am an atmospheric scientist, Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University, and a researcher at the University of Oslo. My research examines how aerosols and clouds influence Earth's climate, combining field measurements, satellite observations, climate modelling and machine learning.

Research interests

• Aerosol–cloud–climate interactions: how aerosol composition, hygroscopicity and optical properties affect cloud formation and Earth's radiation budget.
• Mixed-phase clouds and Arctic climate: the processes controlling liquid water and ice in clouds, including the role of ice-nucleating particles.
• Climate sensitivity and cloud feedbacks: using observations, CMIP6 simulations and climate models to understand and constrain the response to warming.
• Data-driven atmospheric science: applying statistical and machine-learning methods to observations and model output.

ClearArctic and collaboration with Aarhus University

I am Principal Investigator of ClearArctic, funded by the Research Council of Norway through FRIPRO (September 2025–August 2029). The project investigates how changes in cloud phase, sea-ice retreat and ice-nucleating particles affect Arctic cloud feedbacks and future climate.

At Aarhus University, I collaborate with Ulas Im and Lu Zhang on research that connects atmospheric composition, aerosol observations, cloud processes and climate modelling. This collaboration builds on my visiting researcher period at AU in 2024–2025.

Background

Before becoming a researcher at the University of Oslo in 2025, I held postdoctoral positions at Oslo (2023–2025), Tel Aviv University (2019–2023) and the University of Oxford (2017–2019). I received my PhD in Meteorology from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
