Research

I specialize in soil microbial ecology, focusing on C and N cycling in agricultural systems. I apply integrated methods spanning controlled lab incubations to field trials, and have expertise in quantifying i) greenhouse gas emissions; ii) different soil C pools (fracnationation approach); iii) microbial metabolic processes, such as priming effects, enzyme activity, community-level physiological profiling (MicroResp), microbial diversity (PLFA and DNA), microbial C use efficiency (18O-H2O), and N2O isotopmers, including the use of isotopes (13/14C and 15N). I have substantial experience with soil managements to achieve low C farming while reducing N losses, including cover crops, grain legumes, drainage of organic soils and liming strategies.
